SPYWARE & AD-WARE:
Is your computer running slower than normal? Does your start page keep going to porn or you have random web browser windows opening up every 5 minutes? Sounds like you've been infected with spyware/ad-ware. Even if your computer doesn't have any obvious signs, it's still a good thing to check for this invasive software. Click here to see a list of what we run on our systems at home and in the office to keep them clean and running fast. If you want a good all in one solution, we highly recommend using
CounterSpy.
PHISHING E-MAILS:
Although our mail server filters try to block many of these messages, some of them still get through. Please be careful about e-mails asking you to log into your bank, eBay, or PayPal account because of "security reasons." These companies will not send you e-mails like this. They are the work of crooks looking to steal your private information for their own use (identity theft). Do not fall prey to them and give out your credit card number, pin number, or login for your online accounts. If you believe the e-mail is legit and has a link to click on, type the link in manually instead. Also, make sure that the address shown is correct. Many times, it will look like your banking site but the address is an IP address
(e.g. 66.45.545.14) instead of the URL (e.g. www.ebay.com). That alone should alert you to a fake site. Be sure to keep your web browser and system up to date with security patches and fixes. You can read more about these scams at the
Federal Trade Commission for the Consumer
and the
Anti-Phishing Working Group
websites.
