Boca Grande Fishing Report
Dec. 8, 2000
Cool weather has slowed most fishing, but an approaching warm front will bring on a feeding period through the end of the month. The only exception has been seatrout. Seatrout have been very active for several weeks and will continue do so. The average size has been increasing over the last year and this bodes well for January when season reopens.
Redfish have been consistent, but not plentiful. There are lots of under-sized fish mixed with a few keeper size. Most have been taken in the deep back country on low tides. Sheephead fishing has been outstanding around structures like the trestle at Gasparilla and the fish camps (lighters) in Bull Bay. Pompano have been erratic in the passes and deeper flats around Cape Haze peninsula.
Last weekend the Sarasota Flyfishermen's Assoc. annual outing created another human wave of anglers in the back country. We fifteen wading flyfishers covered at least a square mile of flats taking over twenty redfish, hundreds of seatrout, several hundred ladyfish, pompano and a variety of creatures we don't talk about. We also consumed two gallon of Les Fulcher's gumbo and enough redfish to each have a generous portion. All the rest were released. The high point of the day came when Denise Oxler took a 29 inch Snook on one of her own flies. Did I mention the cocktail hour? Never mind.
Ajax Paving Company, a local operation with a home base in Michigan, brought all their key people to Boca Grande for R&R. A dozen anglers fished with us in cool weather and very low tides. Fishing was a little slow but we managed a few snook, redfish and lots of seatrout. You can view the photos on our web site. Big "Thank You" to Jamie Jacobs and Gator Patrick.
