Boca Grande Fishing Report
Wind and rain tried to kill the fishing but didn't quite succeed. Fortunately, the temperatures were warm and the water did not cool off. Now that the weather is settled, we are experiencing the great fishing we've all been waiting for since the cold winter.
Snook are cooperating just about everywhere. Back-country fish are scattered on the high tides and fish along the outside edges are in small groups. Some fish have made it to the passes and are even on the beaches in several places. Flyfishers should try early or late in the day unless you have an overcast sky. Then fishing should be good all day. Lots of bait showing up so use your best pilchard or green-back imitations.
Seatrout are abundant with most of the bigger fish feeding on the out-going tides near pot holes in the grass flats. Several good fish fell to flies, jigs and live bait from the Gypsy this week. Even a few pompano showed while fishing for seatrout this week.
Redfish, for me, have been spotty. I haven't got a handle on them yet but will be looking for small pods of fish scattered all over the bay.
Two species to watch for now are tarpon and Cobia. The tarpon will be showing in fishable numbers sometime this month. Probably on the next moon. Cobia are moving into our area now and as soon as we can get on the beach we will find a few.
All these predictions are dependant on the weather. If the weather stays nice all the above will occur. If we are hit with a late season severe cold front things will be put off for a couple of weeks. I tend to think the former. I hope you get a chance to fish this month. It should be very good.
Tight Lines, Capt. Pete
