Crew: Tom Hughes &Bill Kassakatis

Bill Kassakatis and I fished for LARGEMOUTH BASS on Saturday, 04/04/98, from 9:00 AM until 6:00 PM on Dundee Creek. All bass were caught on lures using light spinning or baitcasting equipment.

This was the first time we fished this area and the weather was perfect for bass fishing. The launching facilities at the State Park were excellent. We did try to go out in the Gunpower River but the wind stopped us.

TOTAL LARGEMOUTH BASS CAUGHT WAS 20. The bass ranged from 12 inches to 17 inches. Average size bass was 14 inches.

Bass were holding on points, wood and grasslines. The majority were caught on points. Tides made no difference we caught bass throughout the day.

MOST PRODUCTIVE LURE-Yamamoto, Single Tail Grub, 5", No. 221, Cinnamon w/Black & Purple (this is also an EXCELLENT lure for smallmouth bass) fished on a 1/8 oz. Oldham’s Weedless Lure Heads.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TECHNIQUE-moving the jig while staying in contact with the bottom. Keeping the rod tip down at all times.

The following lure information is supplied for REFERENCE ONLY. It gives the readers an opportunity to see such lures through the Internet or in catalogs. THESE TYPES OF LURES ARE MADE BY OTHER MANUFACTURERS which may be just as, or more productive than, the lures listed. I do not work for any lure manufacturers below, but these lures have been productive this trip.

OTHER PRODUCTIVE LURES

Bass Assassin - Freshwater Shad Assassin, 3 inch, Blue Flash, Model No. SA13346

Rapala, Husky Jerk, 5 1/ 2 inch, Tenn. Shad and Silver/Blue

Berkley, Power Grub, 3 inch, Smoke

Yamamoto, Single Tail Grub, 5 inch, Model No.194, Watermelon w/Black

Zoom, Mini Salty Lizard, 4 inch, Junebug

All baits were tipped with Smelly Jelly, Crawfish Salt

FISHING TIP

Try fishing a Bass Assassassin, Shad Assassins 3 inch or 5 inch on a Carolina rig. Do not fish it like you would a worm or lizard try short jerks keeping your rod tip down. The most important thing here is to insert the correct type of worm hook or the lure will not move with the action needed to entice a strike. I have tested many type of worm hooks and have found the following size and type to be productive-2/0 Owner, Model No. 5137, Rig-N-Hook, short shank, huge wide bite for the 3" baits and the same in 5/0 for the 5" baits.

Good Fishing…....Tom Hughes
