Fished for: Striped Bass & White Perch
Date Fished: 8/15/98
Boat Name: not named yet
Water Temp: 82 Degrees
Water Clarity: 2 Feet
Seas: Slight Chop
Weather: Partly Sunny

REPORT:
Bill Kassakatis and I fished on Saturday 08/15/98, from 6:00 AM until 4:00 PM, from Rose Cove to Mountain Point (Gibson Island) on the Magothy River.

All fish were caught on light spinning and baitcasting equipment using artificial lures.

WATER CONDITION: We caught the last 2 hours of an outgoing tide early in the morning. This is an ideal time to fish. Stripers tend to feed heavily during the last 2 hours of an outgoing tide. With the low light on the water, it made it an ideal time to catch Stripers in shallow water. We did have a total of 5 large Stripers on before 8:00 AM, but only landed 1 which measured in at 19 inches.

STRUCTURES FISHED: Points, bulkheads, rock piles, wooden pilings, underwater rocks.

LURES USED: Soft plastic baits rigged on 1/4 ounce round head jigs, lip less vibrating crankbaits, top water poppers, spinnerbaits, and suspended jerkbaits.

TOTAL STRIPED BASS CAUGHT WAS 5. The Stripers ranged from 6 inches to 19 inches. The most productive structure was a creek point containing a wooden bulkhead and pilings. Landed 1Striper measuring 19".

NUMBER OF STRIPERS CAUGHT DURING THIS TIDE:

2 - Incoming

3 - Outgoing

0 - Still

MOST PRODUCTIVE LURE: Bill Lewis, Tiny-Trap, 1/8 once, Vibrating Crankbait (the model with 2 treble hooks), Blue Back/Silver Sides

MOST PRODUCTIVE TECHNIQUE: Crank & Stop-cast the lure out, crank 5 times on the reel handle, STOP for 1 second, then repeat this to the end of the cast. NOTE: Do not allow any highly buoyant lures, such as the Original Floating Rapala, to come back up to the surface. To be highly productive these types of lures should stay just under the surface
during retrieve.

The fish were holding tight to cover and your lure had to land within 1’ of the structure to be productive.

OTHER PRODUCTIVE LURES THIS TRIP:

Smithwick, Suspending Rattlin Pro Rogue, Suspended Jerkbait, 5 1/2", 1/2 oz., , Model SDRC 1200:

Black Back/Silver Sides

Rapala, Original Floater Minnow, Floating/Diving Stickbait, 5 1/4", 1/4 ounce, Model F13:

Blue Back/White Sides

Bill Lewis, Tiny-Trap, 1/8 once, Vibrating Crankbait (the model with 2 treble hooks):

Chartreuse/Black Back

A total of 60 WHITE PERCH were caught with a Bill Lewis, Tiny Trap, 1/8 oz., Chartreuse, Blue Back/Chrome Sides, and Gold Tennessee Shad . 7 keeper size were caught over 9 inches.

Fishing was very s l o w during this trip, but we did catch the following species of fish;

Striped Bass, Pickerel, Bluefish, White Perch, Yellow Perch, and a Pumpkinseed.

FISHING TIP:

During this time of year, in the tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay, fish in or as close to the river as possible. The Striped Bass have not schooled up tight yet and very few are back in the creeks.

Good Fishing…..Capt. Tom Hughes
