REPORT

Bill Kassakatis and I fished for LARGEMOUTH BASS on Saturday, 04/11/98, from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM (short day) on the Dundee Creek and Gunpowder River. All bass were caught on lures using light spinning or baitcasting equipment.

Tough fishing for bass on Saturday! The bass were very finicky do to the bright sun and high front. We did fish a stretch on the Gunpowder River but had no hookups. With a limited amount of time we went back in the creek and fished points. We changed our technique to finesse fishing before any bass were caught. Downsized the grubs from 5" to 3", kept the baits on the bottom, and slowed down the presentation.

TOTAL LARGEMOUTH BASS CAUGHT WAS 6. The bass ranged from 14 inches to 15 inches. Average size bass was 14 inches.

Bass were holding on points. The tide was high and had just started going out when we started. All bass were caught between 1:30 to 3:00 PM.

FISH STORY

I had just changed over to a 3" black grub and on my second cast I stuck a nice bass. The bass jumped out of the water once, so I did get a good look at it. Well, the second time it jumped it spit the lure (sound familiar?). Guesstimate the size to be 3#.

MOST PRODUCTIVE LURE-Berkley, Power Grub, Single Tail, 3", Black-fished on a 1/8 oz. Oldham’s Weedless Jig Heads.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TECHNIQUE-moving the jig while staying in contact with the bottom, keeping the rod tip down at all times.

The following lure information is supplied for REFERENCE ONLY. It gives the readers an opportunity to see such lures through the Internet or in catalogs. THESE TYPES OF LURES ARE MADE BY OTHER MANUFACTURERS which may be just as, or more productive than, the lures listed. I do not work for any lure manufacturers below, but these lures have been productive this trip.

OTHER PRODUCTIVE LURES

Berkley, Power Grub, 3", Smoke

All baits were tipped with Smelly Jelly, Crawfish Salt

FISHING TIP

When the bass are finicky, downsize your lures, slow down your presentation and pay extra attention to the movement of your line.

Good Fishing…..Tom Hughes
