Capt. Skip Slomski, Cap. Bill Kassakatis and I fished on Wednesday, 08/26/98, from 6:40 PM until 8:15 PM on the Patapsco River south of the Key Bridge.
Stripers were caught by trolling and with light spinning and bait casting equipment. All fish were caught with artificial lures
This is the first time I trolled for Striped Bass this year. Capt. Skip had us on fish 20 minutes after we left his dock on Rock Creek, located just southeast of the Key Bridge.
TROLLING FOR STRIPERS:
1st Pass:
Picked up grass on 2 rods and we all agreed that was a good sign.
2nd Pass:
We caught a total of 3 Stripers. 2 were 21 inches long and 1 was 17 inches long.
3rd Pass:
We caught a total of 4 Stripers. 1 was 22 inches long, 1 was 21 inches long and 2 were 17 inches long.
4th Pass:
We caught a total of 3 Stripers. 1 was 21 inches long and 1 was 19 inches long.
This was the first time I caught 2 Striped Bass at once and these Stripers were both larger then 18".
TOTAL YIELD & TIME TROLLED:
6 keeper size Striped Bass, between 19 and 22 inches long, caught within 15 minutes after we started trolling.
The above shows you how talented Capt. Skip is when it comes to trolling for Striped Bass. This was a excellent learning experience for me. I had a lot of questions, and Capt. Skip made sure that I understood his answer before leaving the subject. If you want to learn what equipment, tackle, lures and techniques are needed to become a productive fishing person in the method of trolling, take advantage of the opportunity to fish with an expert. I learned more about catching Stripers while trolling last night then I had in my entire fishing career. Thanks a million Capt. Skip Slomski. I had never caught that many large Stripers, in that short period of time before.
CASTING LURES FOR STRIPERS:
After we put away all trolling equipment we told Capt. Skip that we wanted to use some lures to catch and release some more Stripers. We did this between 7:30 PM and 8:15 PM. We fished the same structure that we fished while trolling. A total of 11 Striped Bass were caught while feather and spoon jigging. 10 were between 18 and 22 inches and 1 was 17 1/2 inches.
