REPORT:
Fishing report from WEEK of September 7-13, 1998

Due to high winds from a major cold front there was not much fishing early in the week.
Thursday 9/10 ('She Said NO')
Left the dock around 6:00pm winds NW15 kts, seas 1' very choppy, air 75, water 71, Overcast skies fished the Bear Creek area but caught very little. With Ron & John on board we did catch our limit of 20" fish but that was it. The fish probably due to the front have left the flats.

Friday 9/11 ('Jenny Beck')
Left the dock about 3:30pm winds outgoing tide, NW10kts, seas <1', air 92, water 73.4, and clear skies.
Due to poor fishing yesterday worked a little south and left the river. Rick's party found fish around the Penwood Channel at Brewerton, working the channel edges. Then continued south to Six-foot Knoll, which is were we caught (23) rockfish 24-27". We kept their (8) then looked for white perch. We located the white perch on the uptide side of edges and caught 15 nice 9-11" white perch feather jigging. Our jigs then got tore up as we moved into deeper water and got attacked by bluefish. We decided to head for home and came upon a school of breaking fish. Twice I think I saw Spanish mackerel coming out of the water. I should attempt to try for them next trip. We got back to the dock @ 7:15pm

Saturday 9/12 morning ( 'She Said NO')
Left the dock about 5:45am winds light, seas flat, air 75, water 75.4, and clear skies. I fished alone as I wanted to get some fresh rockfish for a party tomorrow. I ran out to six-foot knoll and landed (2) 26" fish on my first pass. Not wanting this spot to be discovered I returned home and waited for my afternoon party to arrive. Back at the dock @ 7am.

Saturday 9/12 afternoon ('Jenny Beck')
Left the dock about 1:00pm outgoing tide, winds W10 kts, seas 1-2', air 93, water 75.4, clear skies
I decided to honor my parties' request to chum despite my lack of success doing so this fall. We gave it a try and landed 25 fish which were all short but close. Plenty of fish were marked but no size. We decided to give trolling a try and worked towards home. Found the fish hiding again on the uptide side of structure less then 1/4 mile from our chumming anchorage. We found the fish more aggressive then ever. The best lure which landed 9 of 14 fish was a 3 oz white roundhead w/ 6" white shad. Again chartreuse was ignored as the other white baits accounted for balance of fish. These fish all averaged 20-24" size and capped a nice afternoon. On the way back Alfred (from Calif.) told me how excited he was to catch the Chesapeake Striper as the West Coast species came from here originally. He also wanted to catch some white perch, as there are none of these on the West Coast. So we made two drifts over a lump off Ft Smallwood and let him catch a few before heading in. All in all he caught (5) species Toadfish, Croaker, Bluefish Rockfish and White Perch. At the dock 6pm Tom told me this was his best day in the USA since arriving from Japan a year ago. He enjoyed catching fish and I enjoyed every ones' company.

Sunday 9/13 afternoon ('She Said NO')
Left the dock about 1:45pm outgoing tide, winds W5 kts, seas bumpy, air 95, water 77.4, clear skies.
I fished alone as I wanted 2 more fresh rockfish for a party today. I ran out to Bear Creek and landed (2) 21" fish on one pass. Needing to set things up at home, I returned to the dock @ 2:20pm for a party for my daughter.
