REPORT:
Bill Kassakatis and I fished for LARGEMOUTH BASS on Saturday, 04/18/98, from 7:00 AM until 3:00 PM (short day) on the Dundee and Saltpeter Creeks and the Gunpowder River. All bass were caught on lures using light spinning or baitcasting equipment.

We fished under a high front condition. We looked for grass in the Gunpower River but could not locate any. There are some excellent grass beds located in the Dundee and Saltpeter Creeks. Look for grass chunks. Do not look for solid masses of grass in there creeks.

TOTAL LARGEMOUTH BASS CAUGHT WAS 14. The bass ranged from 12 inches to 17 inches. Average size bass was 14 inches. The biggest Largemouth was caught on a Bill Lewis, Rat-L-Trap, 1/ 2 once, Red Shad crankbait.

Bass were located on large flats, in coves and on points. The tide was outgoing when we started. All bass were caught at different times throughout the complete day.

MOST PRODUCTIVE LURE- Bill Lewis, Rat-L-Trap, 1/ 2 once, Red Shad crankbait.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TECHNIQUE-Stop and Crank technique. Cast the crankbait, take 5 turns on your reel-stop (about a 1 count), then crank 5 times. Repeat this back to the boat. At times bass will hit your lure right at the boat, so make sure you work the lure all the way back to the boat.

The following lure information is supplied for REFERENCE ONLY. It gives the readers an opportunity to see such lures through the Internet or in catalogs. THESE TYPES OF LURES ARE MADE BY OTHER MANUFACTURERS which may be just as, or more productive than, the lures listed. I do not work for any of the lure manufacturers below, but these lures have been productive this trip (starting with the most productive).

OTHER PRODUCTIVE LURES

Bill Lewis, Rat-L-Trap, 1/ 2 once, Red Shad Crankbait

Bill Lewis, Rat-L-Trap, 1/ 2 once, Lectric Red Crankbait

Yamamoto, Single Tail Grub, 5 inch, No. 221, Cinnamon with Black and Purple Flex

FISHING TIP

Lures with the color red in them are very productive this time of year. Crawfish have a red tent to them during the spring.

Good Fishing…..Tom Hughes
