REPORT:
Jeffrey Wible and I fished for LARGEMOUTH BASS and CRAPPIES on Saturday, 04/25/98, from 6:15 AM until 3:00 PM on Little Seneca Lake. This lake is located near Gaithersburg, MD in Mongomery County. Gas powered motors cannot be run on this lake since it is for electric motors ONLY. If your boat does have a gas motor, it must be out of the water at all times while you are on this lake. All bass and crappies were caught on lures using light spinning or baitcasting equipment.

We fished under a high front condition with bluebird skies (no cloud cover at all). We fished points, coves, flats and wood. Lures used were suspended crankbaits, Carolina rigged lizards/crayfish, worms, and pig and jig.

TOTAL LARGEMOUTH BASS CAUGHT WAS 3. The bass ranged from 12 to 15 1/4 inches. The biggest Largemouth was caught on a Zoom, Mini Salty Lizard, 4 inch in Watermelonseed fished Carolina rigged.

MOST PRODUCTIVE LURE- Zoom, Mini Salty Lizard, 4 inch, Watermelonseed

MOST PRODUCTIVE TECHNIQUE-Worming technique. Lifting the rod tip between 9 and 11 o’clock, then dropping the baits slowly.

TOTAL CRAPPIES CAUGHT WAS 100 PLUS. Jeffrey saved the day by bringing his crappie rigs and suggesting we fish a beaver den. Using 1 inch tube baits in black and chartreuse, yellow and chartreuse on 1/16 once round head jigs, we caught 40 keeper size crappies. Kept 17 for the frying pan.

The following lure information is supplied for REFERENCE ONLY. It gives the readers an opportunity to see such lures through the Internet or in catalogs. THESE TYPES OF LURES ARE MADE BY OTHER MANUFACTURERS which may be just as, or more productive than, the lures listed.

OTHER PRODUCTIVE LURES

Yamamoto, Single Tail Grub, 5 inch, No. 194, Watermelon with Black Flex

FISHING TIP

Having trouble catching numbers of crappies? Try the following: add a small scaled piece of cut bait (crappie) to your dart. Run the hook through the skin side first. This will produce better than minnows if you are on fish.

EQUIPMENT REVIEW

I purchased a Daiwa, Procaster-Z, Model Number PR-Z601MFSIB, medium action spinning rod in January this year and have been using it for the past 4 months. This rod is one piece (this is a must with me-except in fly fishing) with a cork handle and is rated for lures 1/8 to 3/8 once. The blank is high quality HSD graphite and is very sensitive. What is unique about this rod is there are no guides to break or tangle your line. The line enters into the blank about 1/3 the way up from the handle and comes out the rod tip. You do get longer casts and this rod bends smoothly in a arc when a fish is putting the pressure on. To date, I have caught fish up to 12 pounds on Procaster-Z rods with no problem at all. In fact I purchased an additional Procaster-Z spinning rod (heavy action) since January and plan on purchasing a baitcaster in the future. Check them out in the Bass Pro Shops 1998 Catalog on page 78 or www.daiwa.com-then click on the following: Tackle Department/product catalog/Fishing Rods/scroll down left side of this page to Procaster.
