Fished for: Striped Bass
Date Fished: 11/8/98
Boat Name: Vina's Surprise
Water Temp: 58 Degrees
Water Clarity: Average 3 Feet
Seas: Slight Chop
Weather: Cloudy
REPORT:
I fished on Sunday, 11/08/98 from 12:45 PM until 5:00 PM, on the Patapsco River from Fishing Point Shoal south to Cox Creek.
All fish were caught on light spinning and bait casting equipment using artificial lures. All Striped Bass were released.
LURES USED: soft plastic baits rigged on 1/4, 3/8 ounce round head jigs, suspended crankbaits and jigging spoons.
TOTAL STRIPED BASS CAUGHT WAS 20. The Stripers ranged in length from 15" to 17 1/2". The most productive structure was a shoal with diving sea gulls. Landed 0 Stripers over 18".
STRUCTURES FISHED: Points, shoals, concrete pilings, wooden pilings, wooden bulkheads, and discharges.
NUMBER OF STRIPERS CAUGHT DURING THIS TIDE:
9 - Incoming
11 - Outgoing
0 - Still
BIGGEST STRIPER CAUGHT ON: STORM, Rattlin Chug Bug, Floating Popper,
3 1/2", 3/8 ounce, Black Back/Silver Sides
MOST PRODUCTIVE LURE: BASS ASSASSIN, Salt Water, Curly Shad, Soft Plastic Bait, 4", Rainbow Trout, #CSA27332
MOST PRODUCTIVE TECHNIQUE: Jig & Stop-cast the lure out, let it drop to the desired depth (drops 1 foot per second), then lift your rod tip swiftly from 9 o’clock to 11 o’clock while taking up the slack line-pause for 1 second. Repeat this again and again, until the lure is back at the boat. The Stripers usually take the bait on the fall.
OTHER PRODUCTIVE LURES THIS TRIP:
All productive lures this trip are listed above.
FISH STORY: I had a chance to catch 3 large Striped Bass on a suspended crankbait this trip. The first one hooked was the biggest Striper I had on all year. I can’t even guestimate the size, because I never turned the fish nor saw it. I did see the second and third Striper and they were in the 24" class. I guess that old saying is true at times ‘things happen in threes". The drag operated properly, the line didn’t break and the hooks weren’t bent. Looks like ‘angler error’.
FISHING TIP:
When fishing alone have your fishing net within reach at all times. If not, it can cost you some big fish.
